Many founders feel they have a good idea but don't know how to bring it to the world in a structured way. Others already have a running business but spend their days putting out fires and feel the model lacks clarity.

If either situation sounds familiar, the Business Model Canvas may be your turning point.

Created by Alexander Osterwalder, it is a simple — but powerful — visual tool to map the main pillars of your business on a single page.

Below, I walk you through each of the Canvas's 9 blocks with the strategic questions you should ask yourself. That way, you leave this post with your head buzzing with clarity and practical ideas.

1. Value Proposition

What do you deliver that really matters?

  • What customer problem do you solve?

  • What need do you meet?

  • Why would someone choose your solution over a competitor's?

The value proposition is the heart of the business. If it isn't clear, everything else falls apart.

2. Customer Segments

Who exactly are you selling to?

  • Who are your main customers?

  • Do they have something in common (age, profession, pain points, behaviors)?

  • Is there more than one segment with different needs?

Here, the focus is on deeply understanding your audience. Businesses that try to serve "everyone" end up connecting with no one.

3. Channels

How do you deliver your value proposition?

  • Where does your customer discover your brand?

  • How do they buy? How do they receive the product or service?

  • Which channels work best today?

For example: social media, email, sales reps, your own website, marketplaces, a direct sales team.

4. Customer Relationships

How do you connect with your customer before, during and after the sale?

  • How do you build trust?

  • What kind of support do you offer?

  • Is there a way to build loyalty or community?

Memorable companies don't sell just once — they cultivate lasting relationships with their customers.

5. Revenue Streams

How does your business make money?

  • What are your main revenue sources?

  • Do you charge per product, subscription, commission or another model?

  • Are there other ways to monetize your customer base?

This block forces you to think more creatively about how your business makes money.

6. Key Resources

What is essential to make your business work?

  • Team? Technology? Brand? Data?

  • Do you depend on physical infrastructure?

  • What could you not do without today?

These resources are what sustain your operation day after day.

7. Key Activities

What does your company need to do well to deliver value?

  • Production? Development? Customer service? Sales?

  • Which activities cannot stop?

  • Which ones drive results directly?

This block focuses on what makes your business happen.

8. Key Partnerships

Who do you rely on to operate or grow?

  • Who are your strategic suppliers?

  • Do you have alliances that help with delivery or distribution?

  • Which partnerships would accelerate your results?

No business grows alone — here you map the partnerships that matter for your growth.

9. Cost Structure

What do you spend the most on to keep the business running?

  • What are your fixed and variable costs?

  • What weighs the most today?

  • How does this change as you scale?

This block helps you understand your business's margins and better understand your cash flow projection.
